Hello and Welcome to our Group Blog!
Both sections of ANT1001 meet here. One is a learning community. The other is not -- but we will share the same things. Each of you will be sharing this blog as a community of about 60+ students from dozens of countries, a lesson in itself. Maybe we are the real text to be studied.

HOMEWORK: You should read Kottak's Mirror for Humanity, Chap. #1 for a quiz in class Sep 3rd.

HOW TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN YOUR FIRST POST
Please introduce yourself to the group.
  1. Share your name and/or the name you'd like to be called.
  2. Share where you are from originally and where you live in the Metro area.
  3. What train do you ride to Baruch College?
  4. What's your favorite food when eating out?
  5. Why drew you to choosing Baruch?
  6. How do you greet someone your age in your native culture? What do you say and/or do, if anything, that differs from the generic "Hello, how are ya?" with or without a handshake here in the city?

My name is Diandra. I never really had any nicknames at all in my life. People (family members, friends, etc) tried giving me a nickname but it never stuck so everyone just calls me Diandra.

I think I would be originally from St. Albans (in Queens, NY) but I've lived in about/from 10-12 different places over the last decade throughout Queens and Brooklyn so I'm not too sure how to answer that question. But I guess NYC covers it. At the moment, I live in Hollis (which is in Queens).

Right now, I'm taking the E train then the 6 train to and from Baruch but I don't know how long that's going to last...because I might move again.

My favorite food is macaroni and cheese and has been so my whole life (I don't know what it is about it & why I love it so much).

I decided to go to Baruch way back in December 2007 when I attended a journalism seminar/program thing. Ever since I was in the 9th grade, I've been interested in it.

I don't have any special or ritualistic things I do when I meet/greet people though. I just wave and say "Hi".

Hello, my name is Tolexis. When I was young, people used to called me ToTo. But at this age, I find my nickname a little immature so please call me Tolexis.

I'm originally from China and moved to New York when I was 12. I lived in Queens for all these years and I take the V or R train (sometimes E if I'm running late) then transfer to the 6 train to Baruch.
When eating out, my favorite food is Japanese and when eating in, my favorite is Chinese.(I love my mom's cooking!)

The reason that I choose Baruch as my college is that it has my major (Accounting) and most of my friends goes to Baruch.

In my native culture, I greet someone by saying hello and waving my hand at him/her. In my culture, we don't give handshake (unless in business world) or kiss the person on the cheek.

Hi, my name is chao lin I'm from china and now I live in Chinatown. I have to take either the B or the D train to go to broadway and transfer to the 6 train to get to Baruch College. My favorite food to eat when I eat outside are sushi and fried chiken. The reason I came to Baruch College is because they have a good business program and I'm interested in accounting. When I greet someone I mostly shake hands with them and say "how are you" or I just wave and say "hi".

My name is Louis. My friends call me Lulu but I would rather be just called Louis.

I was born and raised him Queens,NY. I live equally close to both Woodhaven and Junction Metro stops.

I take the E, V or R train then transfer to the 6 train to Baruch.

My favorite food when eating out has to be Japanese. I can never get tired of eating shushi

The thing that drew me to Baruch is it's business programs since my intended major is accounting.

I'm not really sure how people greet each other in my native culture.
The way I greet a male friend is by giving someone a dap while asking "what's good". For a Female friend I hug and for strangers i shake their hands.

When I great my friends I say either, “What up” or “What up kid”. I give them a pound or dap.

Why I choose Baruch college is because Baruch college has great business programs. My favorite food when I eat out is Korean food. The kaibi beef are delicous.

I don't know how my culture greet others. But I greet people by shaking there hand and saying hi or hello.

Hi. My name is Natali. Don't have any nicknames.
I have lived in Great Neck, NY all my life, a suburban town in Nassau county, close to the Queens/Nassau border.
I take the LIRR to Penn Station and then, depending on the weather and whether or not I'm in the mood or tired, I either walk over from Penn Station or take the R (or N or W) over to 23 st and walk from there. There is no direct connection from Penn Station to the six so either way I would have to walk.
My favorite food....depends on my mood. I love love love sushi but then again if I'm in the mood, I could love any food. Good food is good food. Sushi, pizza, falafel, shwarma....the list is endless.
I decided to go to Baruch in April. Yes April 2009. I had thought I was gonna end up at hunter but didn't like it after I visited. I visited Baruch in April and felt a lot more comfortable. That and I knew I wanted to be in the city.
My native culture is Persian (Iranian) and we greet by the "double kiss" on the cheek. We say hi and ask how everything is, how are you, etc. when i greet friends I just use the generic "hey."

My name is Hanna, although my name is really Anna. There was a mistake made in my passport and I want to change my name back to Anna (somehow I like it more). I never had any nicknames.
I am originally from Belarus, a small country that used to be a part former Soviet Union. I have here 4 year ago and since than lived in Queens, NY.
I usually just take F train and then walk for about 20 min. Also I can take F, then E and then 6 (which is way faster), but I'm usually too lazy to walk back and forth in train stations.
I can say that I like all kinds of food. I try to go to different restaurants, but I really like Cuban and Russian food.
The greeting in my country is pretty much the same as in America. Guys shake hand, girls may kiss each other on the cheek and say 'Hello, how are you?'

LilyPoon said...

Hi, my name is Lily Poon.
I'm fine with people calling me Lily but a lot of my close friends always call me by my full name "Lily Poon" or they just call me by my last name "Poon."

I live in Brooklyn all my life. I live right by the F train which I take to 23rd street and walk the rest to get to Baruch College.

I love food. When I eat out I'll eat whatever sounds good. I really enjoy McDonalds $1 sundaes and sushi buffet though.

I originally wanted to go to SUNYs but I didn't get into the ones I wanted to, so I chose to go to Baruch because I heard Baruch was considered as a good school. I plan to try again for SUNYs after a year at Baruch.

I'm not too sure how my culture greets people but I don't do anything anything special when I'm greeting people. I usually say hello with a smile; to my friends, I usually say "hi" and wave.

Hi everyone, My name is Mailenny Pena. I was born in the Dominican Republic, but i was raised in Bushwick,Brooklyn. To get to Baruch College, I take the L train to 14th-Union Square, then the six train to 23rd street. It takes me about 45 minutes. When eating out, my favorite food is pizza. My senior year, I applied to seven colleges and got accepted to five of them.Baruch was the one that offered me student diversity, financial aid, and a strong accounting program. As Glenda stated, everyone greets differently. I personally greet my friends and everyone I know with a kiss, and I say "Hola, como estas? The only time I use a handshake in the city is when I meet someone new.

Hey, my name is Diana. I was born in New York City and lived in Brooklyn my whole life. I normally take the N train to Canal and transfer to the 6 train. My favorite food when I am eating out depends on where I am. I choose Baruch because it has a pretty decent business program and the pricing is not outrageous. I doubt there is special way to greet someone my own age from my native culture. However, when I see someone I would greet them with a wave and a Hi or Hey.

Hello, my name is Erick.
Back in high school, there were like five other eric's, so people called me Mexico, since that's where I'm originally from.
I've lived in Corona almost all my life since i was brought here as a baby. I take the 7, and then the 6 to get here, and it only takes aout 40 minutes.
When I go out to eat, I'm down for whatever; asian, halal, mexican, fast food, etc.
I chose baruch because of its great accounting program, which i'm probably going to major in.
There's nothing special in the way i meet new people. A simple handshake or a "whattup" is all I do.

Hello my name is Elvis Vazquez. Well since my name isn't complicated or long everyone just calls me Elvis. Well I have Mexican background and I was born in New York the best city in the world. Right now I am currently living in Sunnyside Queens, it's a nice peaceful area and I love it here. To come to Baruch College I take the 7 train to Grand Central and then take the 6 to 23rd street.
When i go out to eat I enjoy eating Dominican Food, it's great and i specially like there pork and fried banana's. What drew me to Baruch was that this was a school of business. Since math was the only subject I felt really confident in, I thought to myself maybe business is your calling in life and here I am at Baruch College. When i greet someone from my native culture what we do is slap our hands to make a nice popping sound then we let go by making a snap noise using our thumbs. Also if we are a bit far from each other and we cant get close to each other then what we do is shake our head up to the person we are greeting. To us its like telling them "hello".

Hello, my name is Mohammed. I used to hve so many nicknames, some of them stayed but most of them fell off. im still called cheesecake by my close friends, but also "left wing" bc i used to play hockey with my friends and am really trustworthy.

Originally i would be from bangladesh but came to the us when i was 1 to Cali but finally moved to ny when i was 4. Right now i live in woodside, which is in queens.

Right now i take the 7 train from 61st street of woodside to grand central then take the 6 to 23rd

My favorite when eating out depends on the ppl i go out with. If i go out with my family i jsut eat whatever they order. If i go out with my friends i just eat whatever is open at that time. Usuall i will eat a banana that i take with me from my house.

I chose baruch bc all my friends and i decided to go here and just take our college experience hanging back. I also picked it bc i would be homesick since all my other schools are in the midwest.

In my native culture, i greet some my age by saying the traditional greeting of "asalamu walikum" which is seen as a hello. If i know them personally then we both would run upto each other and slam our shoulders into each other as a greeting.

My name is Jasmine, and that's usually what people call me unless they're trying to be cute or funny by abbreviating my name to Jas.
I'm Albanian and I live in Middle Village which is in Queens.
To get to school, I take the M train from the last stop to the 6 train.
I love all types of food but my favorite is probably Chinese.
I chose to go to Baruch because I originally wanted to become interested in the field of business, but after taking a psychology class in my senior year of high school I changed my mind. My mom also attended Baruch and encouraged me to go if I wanted to pursue business.
When I meet my friends I usually just say "hi", but in my native culture it is customary to shake the persons hand and give them a kiss on the cheek. If the person is considerably older than you or family you're supposed to kiss them on both cheeks.

Robert Gordon said...

My name is Robert Gordon. I grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, and I moved to Bushwick, Brooklyn this past summer. I am living with 4 roommates, all of whom are in their mid-twenties.

I take the L train from Montrose Ave. and either switch to the 6 at or walk from Union Square. When I occasionally stay at my parents' house, I take the F train from 71st Ave. and I walk from the 23rd St. station. I like walking through Madison Square Park.

I love trying new things, especially new restaurants. I do have a few favorites, such as Balthazar on Spring St. and Chinatown Brasserie on Lafayette. I love to go out for seafood, pasta, steak, or anything else pretty much.

When I visited Baruch in November, I just remember walking inside the VC and not feeling like I was in a building, but rather on campus. It felt the way college was supposed to feel. My favorite part was walking outside and being on 25th St. It feels as if you're on campus while you're smack in the middle of Manhattan.

I don't really have a unique way to greet anyone, just the typical New Yorker greeting. A handshake, dap, or a kiss on the cheek, depending on the situation.

I'm originally from Israel and my whole family is from Ukraine,
From Bay Ridge (Brooklyn) I ride the R, N, and then 6 trains to college and it takes me about an hour,
My favorite food is Chinese :) love that sesame chicken,
I chose Baruch for it's reputation in the business field,
To be honest, I have no idea what my native culture is, but i grew up always greeting people with a handshake.

Again, first blog post, EVER! idk, did i do it right?

Hello, my name is Glenda Rodriguez and I live in Bronx, NY. I am Dominican and Puerto Rican and I take the six train to school. I love to go out and eat chinese food. What drew me to choosing Baruch was the convinience of the location and the affordability. Lets not forget its reputation. Everybody greets differentlly some with a kiss, others with a hug, handshake, bumping heads waving or saying different greetings. I personally greet my friends with either a "Hola" a "que lo que?" or a "wass good". At work or for teachers I greet them with a "goodmorning/afternoon", "hello" or" how are you today."

Hello, everyone. My name is Li Ping and this is the name I’d like to be called. I am from China and now I live in Brooklyn. I live in Brooklyn since I immigrated here in New York. Every schoolday, I take the N train to 14th street Union Square and transfer to the 6 train to get to 23rd street.
When eating out, I usually go to McDonald’s because it is fast serving, no need to wait for seats. But talking about favorite food, I like Japanese food because I like to eat sushi very much; therefore, I learn to make the simplest kind of sushi to satisfy my desire.
One of the reasons I came to Baruch is because I attended a summer College Now class in Baruch which led to my first college course experience. After that, I felt I really liked Baruch and so decided to apply to Baruch when I graduated from High School. In my native culture, which is Chinese, I usually greet people by waving at them and saying, “hello” with a smile. I shake hands with them only when we meet for the first time.

Hi, my name is Raymond (no everybody loves raymond pun, thank you). I am fine with Raymond or just Ray.

I was born in New York, but I lived in China until 4tjavascript:void(0)h grade when I spent a year living in upstate New York. I moved to Woodside, Queens and lived there until I moved to Forest Hills during junior high, but I am back to living in Woodside now.

I take the 7 train to Grand Central and transfer to the 6 train and ride it for 3 stops to get to Baruch. The trip takes around 30-45 mins.

I don;'t have any preference when eating out, mostly just depends on where I am at that moment.

I choose Baruch because its affordable and has a good business program.

There is nothing unique in my culture about greeting someone. Its just the usual "How are you?"

My name is Albina. I don't really have an official nickname but once in a while my friends would just give me random nicknames such as Albz or Abby and a few others i dont mind being called either or.

Im originally from Uzbekistan, but I moved here when I was three. I live in Flushing, Queens and have been living here for practically my whole time living in NY.

To get to Baruch College every morning I take the 7 train then transfer to the 6 train.

When eating out my favorite food is probably a good home-made type burger and fries (like ones in a local diner not McDs lol).

I chose Baruch college because I liked the vibe and energy of it, i also liked its location I absolutely love the city! I also thought that it held alot of opportunites for me in the business field which is a field I am looking forward to pursuing. and of course not to mention the it being afforable and being recognized as a top cuny and a great business school in NYC.

When I greet someone I almost always use the phrase "kak dela?" which means "how are you?" in Russian, I would usually give a hug and a kiss to the person if im very familiar with them, and if I dont know them to well I would most likely just shake hands with them but once I get to know ppl more I greet them in all kinds of ways from running to them and giving them a big hug to doing wierd handshakes that we might have made up lol

Hi, my name is Michael. You can call me Mike if you want, because I don't really have any unique nicknames even though some friends do call me by my last name.

I was born in Russia and moved to the US when i was six years old. I have lived in Brooklyn, NY ever since.

I have to get on the D train and transfer to the R train to get to Baruch.

Well I dont have any particular favorite foods, but if I had to choose, I enjoy eating Chinese and Russian meals when I eat out.

When I was considering what colleges to apply to during senior year in high school, I decided that i wanted to go into a business profession, not realizing that the economy was dying. So even when I was recieving acceptances from other colleges, I constantly had my eye on Baruch. It was cheap and had a great reputation. But after agreeing to go there, I started having doubts about my future profession. Don't get me wrong, I have no regrets about coming to Baruch, I'm just not 100% on a major or a career at the moment. I'm hoping that after a year a Baruch, i will be able to decide.

And as for the greeting, it's a standard "hello, what's up?" (said in Russian) with a handshake. I havent lived in Russia for awhile now, but I did visit it a year ago and the greetings aren't very different from the ones people give here or in most other countries.

My name is Kelvin Lee. I'm Chinese. I was born in Manhattan and have lived in Brooklyn my whole life. I can take the D or N train from 36th Street and transfer to the 6 at Bleecker or Union Square(respectively) or i can take the R to 23rd street. I eat a lot of fast food but I like to eat many different types of foods. I chose to go to Baruch because I wanted to do something in business and I didnt want to dorm at the time. I would greet someone my age in my native culture with a 'pound' or a wave or a hug. I would usually say 'what up' too.

My name is Iqra Yaseen. I was born here but my parents are from Pakistan. I live in Astoria, NY and I would usually take the N train to Lex and then transfer to the 6. My favorite food which I like eating outside is General Toa's Chicken from Fatima's Halal Kitchen. The reason I choose to go to Baruch was because it was convenient for me and I like the diversity here. In my culture we just say "As-Salaam Aliykum" meaning peace be upon you and just have a normal hand shake or hug.

Hi! My name is Mei Yu Fung but I prefer to be called Mei. I was born in Guangdong china. I have lived in Brooklyn for approximately 16 years.
To get to Baruch I usually take the N uptown and then transfer to the 6 train. When it comes to my favorite food I don't have just a single favorite dish because I basically love everything that tastes good. I chose Baruch because it has a great reputation for those who wants to major in business. I'm not sure about how I would usually greet someone of my age in my native culture because sadly most of the individuals that i know around my age are Americanized so we just say "hello" or "hey".

Hello, my name is Susan and I don't prefer any nicknames.

I am originally from Manhattan but moved to Brooklyn. I am currently in the Sunset neighborhood in Brooklyn.

I take the "N" train and transfer to the "6" train to go to Baruch.

When I eat out with friends, I would prefer eating sushi since it is my favorite type of food and there are so many options to it.

The business program in Baruch drew me to this college.

In my native culture, we would greet each other with just a "Hello" and then introduce ourselves with a handshake occasionally.

Hey wassup guys, My name is Wei Long Liu but you probably already heard of me because I’M A GREAT ONE! You guys can call me Wei because Wei Long is such a long name and requires too much energy to say it.

So I'm a chinese kid who was born in China and raised in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. I have been living in Manhattan for 10 years now, 7 of them with my current home. I don't take a train to school since I like using my great legs to walk to school which is only like 20 minutes away. I enjoy most foods because I pretty much devour almost anything edible within my proximity but nothing beats a smoothie from Jamba Juice.

I chose Baruch because it was a location near my home and it was a place where business is the biggest thing next to me. It's also a place where most of my friends are going so it would feel like the old times before high school.

When greeting a person my age, I usually give a high-five to females and a pound/handshake to males.

Sups everyone, my name is Allen Li. I was born in New York City "the Big Apple" Asian American, majoring in Graphic Design YES Graphic Design in a Business College but eventually I'll be transfer out to either FIT or SVA to excel in my major. A little business minor would help a lot in finding a great job. I live in SoHo, Manhattan. I usually take the 6th train on Bleecker Street to college where commute time takes about 10 minutes.
My favorite food depends on my mood, I tend to eat more American style food (sandwiches, pasta salads etc)than my traditional home cooked food. Fish is a nono except sushi no idea why.
Why did I choose Baruch I have no idea maybe the name was captivating.
As for hand gestures, for younger people who are ABC we usually greet each other with the Dap handshakes "the one where you swing at each others' hand close to a formal one or maybe do a pound" Greeting older generations would be a firm and sturdy gripped handshake with a slight guiding left hand with a pat on the shoulder but for greeting friends at my age: guys would be "Yo with a saluting two finger wave" girls would be a hug if it seem like they wanted to approach to you closer.

Hello, my name is Pebbles Obando. I never really had a nickname since my real name is pretty much a nickname in itself.

I am from and was born in Costa Rica. I move to the Bronx when I was 2 then to Upstate, NY (Amsterdam)when I was 3 and have been living there ever since. Right now I'm living at the new yorker which has dorms for students.

While the weather is still pleasant I walk about 25 minutes to get to Baruch. When winter comes ill take the R train.

I'm open to eating anything when i eat out. I enjoy international restaurants. My favorite is Spanish food though, nothing beats mami's cooking.

I transfered to Baruch because of its business school ranking and rep. also because its in NyC which has many oppurtunities.

In my native culture I greet people with an "Hola, como esta" and a kiss on the cheek. With close friends we do the generic "hey" but with a huge. A formal hello here in the city for me is just a firm hand shake.

Hey, my name is Benjamin Chung, but most people call me Ben. Just plain, and simple, its alot easier then Benjamin.

Well I was born in Brooklyn, and have always lived here. Never moved out before, this was my first home and my only home. I live around Sheepshead Bay, and I take the Q train to 14th Street Union Square and transfer to the #6 Train to get to Baruch. Its a pretty annoying ride but its okay, i think most of us all have commutes like this.

Well anyway, i guess my favorite food would be nearly anything Italian. I have a neighbor who is Italian, and shes a grandmother of many children, and she makes the most amazing pastas, and much more. She really knows how to cook! Well she always brings over some to my house, and shares a buncha' that good homemade cooking. It's always a good treat to have, so ever since I was little I've grown to love it.

Being in a family of all business men and women, its given that i would get into it too. Nearly my whole family works in banks at the moment, and of course growing up I got into it as well. I may want to pursue other things but so far it's looking like I'm headed for business.

Normally, a hand shake or a "pound" works when i say Hi to people, but other then that maybe a "hand wave" or a simple "hello" is suffice.
As for the native culture I'm not really sure exactly. Never really seen my family or others, do anything really special.

I used to take 7 train to Grand Central, and then transfer to 6 train to 23rd street. It takes me about 1 hour if there's no busy traffic. My favourite food is Chinese food like dumping.
The reason I transfered to Baruch Collge is because I like studying professional businese program here. Of course, I have many friends in Baruch College, too.
In my country, when we meet each other, we used to shake hands and say hello. To unfamiliar people ,I would like to smile rather than shake hands with him.

my name is Daniel Murphy. Most people call me just "Murphy", i'm rarely ever called by my first name. I was born and raised on Staten Island and have lived in the same house my entire life.

Depending on my mood I either take the ferry to the R train, or I take the X5 bus to school. I chose Baruch because of 3 main reasons. Its in the city, its cheap, and it has a great business school.

My favorite food is pizza. I would eat pizza everyday and never get sick of it. When i greet people its usually just a plain handshake and a "whatsup".

Hello, My name is Sabita Agrawal and I am an International Student.I am originally from Nepal and at current I live in Woodside, Queens. I take 7 and 6 train to get to Baruch and it takes me anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes. I love Spanish, Indian and Nepali food. My major is Finance and Investment and Baruch is a well known school for Business so I choose Baruch. I usually say hi to my friends and "Nameste" to elders. Nameste is the way we greet our elders in our culture.
