Voting on Gay Marriage Today - Nov 4

While McNeil-Lehrer reports a record breaking turnout from the electorate today, major initiatives concerning gay marriage are being decided in voting in three major states.
"Initiatives dealing with gay marriage, stem cell research and abortion also are on the ballot in several states.

California's Proposition 8 would terminate marriage rights for gay couples. Arizona's Proposition 102 would amend the state's constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Similarly, Florida's Proposition 2 would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage."
Why is it that humans fight over defining laws for other people in this manner? What is the assumption about humans that such activity suggests? That we must be all the same? What do you think?

I think perhaps laws are very powerful, and if you don't like something such as gay marriage, you have to have it in law to be able to restrict it. Human being make law so that they can point to it and say, "because the law saids so", so that they can get away with explaining their own personal views, which everyone has different sets. There is law that we make now, and then there is another "law" like the Bible, which is opened to wide interpretations, and not everyone believes in. I don't think you can impose personal belief on other people, and certainly it's wrong to base law on a certain groups agenda that applies to all.

Gay marriage has been a controversial topic for many years. What i find so interesting about it is whats the big deal? Its weird that people will allow gay couples to adopt but not marry. Whats the difference? To me people are people, so gay people are people as well. What I don't understand is what is so wrong about having two people getting married. I always thought marriage was based on the idea of "loving till death do we part". Its not like theirs a guideline to marriage, saying that marriage has to be a guy and a women. In some cultures people marry animals or other things we consider weird. I just think that people are making a big deal over something very little. Marriage is something that is entrusted to people and should be used for the people. So, I just don't believe that our govt should have a restriction or regulation on something like this.
